Recent Points of Pride from the Performing Arts

Art professor Joey Fauerso is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient. She is among 180  recipients chosen from a group of almost 2,500 applicants. Fauerso’s work consists of painting, video, installation and performance addressing issues of gender, humor, and family.

Sound Recording Technology alum Brad Engleking has won  a 2022 Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound for the Apple TV documentary “Fathom.” Austin-based Engleking graduated in 2000 and has worked on a number of documentaries and movies by director Robert Rodriguez.

Spencer Stephenson (B.F.A. ’19) costars alongside Kaitlyn Dever, Emilia Clarke, and Minnie Driver in the film “Rosaline”  premiering Oct. 14 on Hulu. “Rosaline” is a twist on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”  told from the perspective of  ex-girlfriend Rosaline (Dever). Stephenson plays Paris, the man that the Capulet’s want Juliet to marry.

Ana Baer’s video dances had 15 screenings in 10 different countries. A professor in dance, Baer's films "Ixhel" and "Imagenes de una Realidad" were semifinalists for the best film award at We Make Films International Film Festival in Wallington, Britain.

Cassie Abate, associate professor in theatre and dance, has published "The Art and Practice of Musical Theatre Choreography." She is the co-head of the Musical Theatre program and recently worked with the Utah Shakespeare Festival as a director and choreographer on “All's Well That Ends Well” and “Sweeney Todd.”

Music undergraduate Nolan Hopkins toured over the summer with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. The group  traveled over 10,000 miles, performing in more than 40 competitions and exhibitions before a combined audience of over 300,000. Hopkins, from New Braunfels, is  working toward a degree in music education.

  • Regents Professor Jason Kwak and the TXST Symphony Orchestra will  perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue on Nov. 18 at Evans Auditorium. Other music for that concert includes “Der Fledermaus Overture” (Strauss) and “Swan Lake Suite” (Tchaikovsky). 
  • The TXST Chorale will present a performance of the Grammy nominated  Considering Matthew Shepard by faculty member Craig Hella Johnson on Nov. 20 at Evans Auditorium. See music.txst.edu/events.html
